Objective. Trace elements play essential roles in metabolism.

Aim. This study explored the association between trace elements with Asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap (ACO) and its different types in humans;

Methods. 5,138 participants were enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The association between the trace elements and ACO was assessed for linearity. Weighted logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the trace elements, ACO, and their components. In addition, Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and quantile-based G-computation (Qgcomp) were employed to evaluate the overall association between biological trace elements, ACO, and its components.

Results. Restricted cubic spline functions revealed that Fe, Ca, and Cu exhibited nonlinear relationships with ACO. In the multivariate logistic regression model, fully adjusted for confounding variables, compared to the lowest quartile, the higher quartiles of Cu were associated with a higher risk of ACO (ORs: 1.47, 1.324, and 2.295), whereas higher quartiles of Ca were associated with a lower risk of ACO (ORs: 0.519, 0.549, and 0.789). Furthermore, the WQS and Qgcomp analyses revealed that Cu had the highest weight in the development of ACO, with higher concentrations of Cu positively correlated with the risk of Asthma and COPD.

Conclusion. This study found a nonlinear relationship between Fe, Cu, and Ca and the occurrence of ACO. Copp...
